Who Can Use Portable Solar Power?

By: Jean Houston

Portable Solar Power Not Just For Environmentalists

While camping in remote areas or working in construction where electric power is at a premium, having your own portable solar power unit to plug into can supply some of the power needed for comfort or convenience. Most people consider solar power as a means of alternative power generation that will eventually replace coal-fired generating plants but the sun plays a crucial role in their ability to operate adequately.

The theory of solar power is well tested and has been proven as a viable choice, and with new technology in solar panels and batteries with a longer life, portable solar power units are making an impact on those needing some power while on the go. The units still contain a battery that hoards power until it is needed, and many of the newer portable solar power units can be charged in various ways. A couple of units give the user the option of charging the battery through its solar panel, plugging it into current in the home or connecting it to the car.

With this flexibility, a portable solar power unit can be useful in a variety of applications. The size of the unit and what appliances can be operated by it will depend on the individual choice of portable solar power units.

Small Units Carried By Hand

The majority of the weight for a portable solar power unit is in the battery. Typically, solar power is used to charge batteries, 12-volt direct current, which is then passed through a converter into which appliances requiring 120-volt alternating current are connected. With many portable devices designed to operate on 12-volt direct current, they can also be operated from the same unit.

Finding a portable solar power units to meet specific needs is getting easier every day. Looking to buy a specific unit, it should have at least two outlets for AC power and one more in which to plug a 12-volt power plug…the type resembling a cigarette lighter in cars. How it is charged should be another top concern.

Having a portable solar power unit that can be charged at home before leaving on a camping trip will make sure it can be used from day one. Once in the wilderness, when the battery begins to run low, it can be connected to a foldable solar cell panel and charged for additional use. While appliances such as small refrigerators and heaters can be used, they will drain the power quickly.
