Hiking Packs Can Be A Big Help

By: Jamie Preston

Heavy Duty Hiking Packs

It used to be that if you wanted a really effective hiking pack you had to hit the military surplus store and by something that a soldier would use. Then the civilian companies started to catch on and they made some very effective hiking packs that could not only carry a lot of essentials for hiking but they could also double as things like a leg or arm splint if you were injured. That is a great idea but it leaves the question of what to do with all of your stuff if you need to use your hiking pack as a splint?

Today we have a whole new generation of hiking packs that look like rocket boosters on people’s backs and are designed to be much more effective than old school hiking packs. They now come with compartments and extra spaces placed strategically throughout the hiking pack it what can seem like a nonsensical manner but it does have a purpose. The straps are thick and padded and even the part where your back meets the hiking pack is padded and engineered to reduce stress. Those that make the new generation of hiking packs have devised ingenious ways of packing more stuff into a pack without destroying the hiker’s back.

Location, Location, Location

So you may be wondering why they would add things like compartment trays to hiking packs because there is a possibility that such things could make the pack heavier, right? Wrong. By strategically distributing the stuff in your pack you can make it easier to carry more stuff because the weight is more distributed and distributed weight is much easier to carry because it occupies space on your entire back as opposed to just wearing out one area. With the weight distributed properly you can carry much more equipment and enjoy your hike even more.

When you are hiking and carrying a huge hiking pack you want to be sure that you are protecting your back as much as possible. Older packs never took this into consideration but the newer ones have a padding system that is designed to distribute the weight even further and therefore reducing the stress on the back even more. It is actually very simple looking engineering that took years to get right but now your pack can do a little more to protect you from future back issues than the old packs did which has to be a relief for those hikers that like to carry a lot of equipment with them.
