A Water Tower Is Seen In Most Small Towns

I often see a water tower in every small town I pass while driving down the highway. There was one in the small town that I grew up in, and I have no idea why it was there. I never thought that any of them were used, and if they were, the water surely couldn’t be used for human consumption, at least I wouldn’t think. The tower in my town sat as it has for years, and if there is water in there, it has been there for a very long time. However, I have found that I know very little about how a water tower works.

The water in any water tower still in use is probably very fresh. It should be just as fresh as the water that comes out of your tap. While the water tower is there for an emergency water supply, it does not work simply by holding water there for a time when the pumps break. The water is going from the purification center through the tower and to the town. If demand is down, the excess will stay in the tower. When consumption is up, the water will drain from the tower for use throughout the town.

The most common thought then would be as to why they are so high up off of the ground instead of buried under the ground and out of the way. It all has to do with how water moves through pipes. Water is pushed through by pressure. The water can go up into the tank, but then when it comes down it creates more pressure to keep the system moving as it should. The higher the tank is placed in a town or community the more pressure it can provide when needed.

I guess my thinking about a water tower has been wrong for a very long time, and I never thought to ask. It’s one of those things that seems obvious when apparently it is not. I thought the water tower sitting in my town was from an era long gone, and always wondered why I saw newer ones springing up in towns around me. I guess now I know. It’s great to know that while the power might go out on occasions, I have never had to worry about the water going out, unless there was a pipe break, and now I know why that is.
