Last year around Christmas time I asked my youngest brother what he wanted for Christmas. He’s hard to buy for, and most of the things he really wants are out of my price range. He told me that he could use a water proof flashlight. Though I thought that was a nifty idea, I couldn’t imagine why anyone would need one. Surely he wasn’t going to be swimming around in a pond or lake and needed a light? That was absurd. When he explained why he needed it a light bulb, so to speak, went off in my head, and I realized there were a lot of great reasons for having one.
A water proof flashlight will work for a regular light, of course, but what about those time when you encounter water? If you use a light to see in your basement, like many who don’t have a finished basement might do, you don’t want your light to peter out when you drop it into a puddle. It can happen! My basement is proof enough of that. The water heater leaks, and my landlord has yet to fix it. If the floor has water on it for any reason, a water proof flashlight wouldn’t die on you if you dropped it.
A water proof flashlight might also be a good idea if you break down and it is dark and raining outside, or even if there is snow on the ground. These are times when your light might indeed come into contact with water, and you need to be sure it keeps working for you. You might want to have a spare water proof flashlight to keep in your truck in an emergency kit.
The reason my brother wanted a water proof flashlight was because my stepfather is a race car driver, and there are times when it is raining on race night. Though the rain usually stops the races, they want to get under the hood and give the car a once over incase the rain stops and they can continue. Where my stepfather races there are no overhead lights, at least not well enough to see the car when he needs to. One night they could have used the water proof flashlight, but no one had one. That seemed like good enough reason to me. I think when I go out searching for one for my brother this year – I didn’t get him one last year - I might pick up a few for myself. You just never know.
