There is a great deal of work to owning a home. We enjoy owning our home, but you can never be prepared for all the things that need to be done. Simple projects can turn into much longer time consuming events. We have experienced this a number of times in doing projects both inside and outside our home.
We live in a farm house that is over a hundred years old. It has been remodeled and added on to several times through the course of the years. The previous owners liked wall paper. They used it in almost every room. My husband and I are not big fans of wallpaper so we started removing it room by room. On course we ran into some wall repairs that needed to be done so we called in a person that specializes in dry wall to do some patching. What we thought would be a project that would take a few weekends ended up taking us six weeks.
We also wanted to change some things in the yard. The previous owner was a teacher so she had the summer months off to do the yard work. She had planted several perennial gardens in the front, side and back of the home. The front flower bed was raised and the dirt was held in place with redwood boards. It was too large for the space, also a great deal of work to keep weeded. We decided to turn that area into grass. As we began removing the dirt we discovered that the flower bed was created to hide a huge stump. My husband thought the stump most have been buried for several years so the tree stump removal would be quite easy. He hooked on to the stump with our truck and started pulling. It did not take long for us to realize that this method of tree stump removal was not going to work. He was ripping up the lawn with the truck and the stump had not budged. I looked in the yellow pages and found a tree stump removal company. There had been a large storm in the area the week before so most of the tree stump removal companies were busy cleaning up the trees that went down in the storm. It took them two weeks before they were able to come and remove our stump. This was another project that went from a planned couple of days, to weeks to complete. We have learned that whatever project we are going to do we should add at least two weeks to the amount of time it will take to complete.
