Tools Of The Trade - The Service Industry

By: Francis Brompton

Have you ever thought about how true the expression the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence is? It seems that no matter how much we have or how blessed we have been our neighbor, or co-worker, or relative has it better. Yet when you stop and listen to them then are thinking the same thing about someone else. I hope it is not human nature to be envious of others, but so often this appears to be the case.

It seems that all professions come with their own set of skills, advantages and headaches. It does not need to be a contest over who works harder or whose job is more stressful or important. We need people in all the different job categories in order to have a well working society. We each have the tools of the trade that we are in that we need to learn and apply to the various aspects of society that we work in. The tools of the trade for an attorney are the knowledge of the law and the ability to defend a person’s rights under the law. The tools of the trade for a doctor are knowledge of different diseases, medications, procedures and referral sources so they can best advise their patients. These two professions seem to be the highest paid in our society and in some ways the most revered. However other people also bring skills and tools that support the positions that we hold in esteem.

Many people look down on the workers of the service industry; however our stays in hotels, our meals in restaurants, the safety of our streets and the cleanliness of our office spaces would not be the same without the people that are willing to work in the service professions. People in the service industry are the clogs that keep the rest of society functioning in an orderly fashion. All the knowledge and skills in the world would not help a doctor if there were not support staff helping to keep the hospital clean. Even the highest ranking judges in the land would not be able to hand down their decisions on cases of the streets were not cleared of garbage. We all depend on each other to keep our society running. No one clog in the machine, spoke in the wheel or set of tools of the trade are more important or expendable than another. The next time you are thinking that someone else’s job is easier or more desirable than yours; take the time to find out the stresses and skills that the other person needs to use on a daily basis. When we take the time to do this we discover that the grass is not all that green after all.
