Hand Made Greeting Cards

By: Sky Hudgins

It seems that the trend these days is to go back to basics. People are trying to create a simpler time in their lives and trying to avoid constantly being on the go. This can be hard for people that have developed a schedule around constant involvement in different activities. Many times people feel at a loss to fill their time with activities that do not surround the television, computer or electronic enhancements. More and more people are returning to doing crafts that they can make with art supplies and creative thinking.

There are many crafts that fit into this category one on the more popular is making hand made greeting cards as well as scrap booking. Both of these activities can get expensive if you go to shops that specialize in the craft, however hand made greeting cards can also be made with simple items that are found around the house.

I have purchased card stock when I find it on sale. I have also found some at garage sales. Many times people will buy a great deal of supplies when they are going to begin a craft, but then sell it on a garage sale if they do not take the time to complete the projects. I decorate the cards using buttons and construction paper and beads. I also use pieces of fabric and tissues papers. Some of the designs I come up with are abstract and others turn out to be appliqu? pictures. I have even used quilt patterns to create the hand made greeting cards. The great thing is that each one is unique. I can make them with themes that fit a specific person, or I can make up several general ones that I can give to anyone. One thing that I have started doing is keeping all of my hand made greeting cards and the materials together in one spot. I bought a large decorative hat box that I put items in that I think I can use in making the cards. Then when I have some time I can open the box and have all of my supplies ready for me. This allows me more time the having to search for scissors glue and rulers. I also bought a calligraphy pen for writing greetings in the cards. I like to complete my hand made greeting cards by also decorating the envelopes that I put them in. This gives a nice added touch to the cards.

I like to create my hand made greeting cards while I am watching television or listening to music. It makes me feel that I am making better use of my time and it saves the expense of purchasing cards.
