Cost Of Building Vs. Already Built

   By: Leah Francisco

There are many things that influence the major decisions that we make in our lives. We can have long thought out plans and preparations, yet there are times when events can alter our plans without any warning. My husband and I talked about having a home by a lake for our retirement years. We planned our investments, savings and time off towards achieving that goal. Then one day I happened past a house on a large lake just as a realtor was placing a for sale sign in the front yard. I had often admired the house and I took down the reality information. When I looked at that property listing on the internet I was pleasantly surprised that the price seemed to be affordable. We were still several years away from retirement but we made an appointment to see the house. We fall in love with the hundred year old home and the wonderful lake property it sat on. We made the huge decision to move to the lake home and commute.

We have lived in our lake home for six years and have decided that this would be a great time to up grade to a new house. Our property has increased in value so we have decided to look into the cost of building a new home. We have had six years to get to know the lake and the lots that are still available on it. We have been watching the market for listings of build able lots. Recently a family decided to split off a nice level lot from the property they own. We immediately purchased the lot and contacted a local contractor to discuss the cost of building a new home.

We love our present home, but it is over a hundred years old. The master suite is in the upper level of the home and the laundry is in the basement. We know that as we age we are not going to be able to comfortably climb all the stairs that we are now. We have asked the contractor to find us a blueprint and also the cost of building a one story home. The contractor is concerned that we will not be able to get the size we want in a one story home and still have a nice yard because the lot is long and narrow. We want the majority of the rooms and windows to face the lake. After looking at many design options and the cost of building them we decided that we could build a two story home to have the space we wanted. We would have a main floor laundry as well as master bedroom and have the guest rooms on the upper level. By doing this we would not have to use the stairs on a daily bases, but would still be able to accommodate over night guests. We are now in the process of realizing another one of our dreams, having a home that is built just for us.
