More And More Professionals Are Looking For A Way Out.

By: Dan Iverson

An attorney friend of mine came up to me after church yesterday and seeded a little concerned. He said, "I really need a change." I guess because he knows I make my living online, he though I might have a few suggestions for him.

Having seen other friends approach me through the years, I asked why he was asking. He said that the many sacrifices were starting to take their toll. He said that often, he was making stances for things he did not feel were necessarily right, but more than that, his family was growing up and he was missing it

I asked him what he meant by that and he said that he was very disillusioned by the tactics required to further his causes. He said that he was tired of all the grey and that often times he isn't even sure what's right or wrong anymore.

He explained further by saying that after being with his firm for more than 9 years, and having the high overhead at home to go with is salary, he did not think it would be easy to find something that paid as well, or had the continued upward potential. He said that he had read a book on working from home, but he did not see an obvious niche that he could make a living with. Then he said despite that, he did like the idea of working from home.

I was amazed at how much time he had spent thinking about all of this. He went on to explain that since he was a little boy, he had always wanted to travel and see things that he read about for himself. He said that he thought that it would be wonderful to explore these things with his wife and kids. He said that his wife's father was in the service and she had traveled and lived in many different places. He said quite frankly, he was jealous.

Being quite surprised by how much he had really thought about all of this, I thought he was not just brining this up in passing. At this point, I asked him what I felt was the next logical question, "Do you have any money to try and get something started? He said that he and his wife were guilty of putting saving off for too long. He said that the 6 plus figures it took to start a franchise, was out of the question.

I asked him if he knew that the average successful business owner has paid with 5 failed businesses, at least one bankruptcy, one failed marriage and a whole lot of blood sweat and tears. He said he kind of hoped that he could skip a few of those payments. He said that is why he wanted to talk with me and see if I would be willing to mentor him through a few of the pitfalls and see if we could not help him get on the fast track.

I asked him if he knew that travel was the fastest growing industry and that it was already doing over 5 trillion dollars a year in business. He said, "Wow, I had no idea. That would be like a dream come true to make a living in that field." I told him that some famous people like Clark Howard had started in travel. I said that I had been looking into it myself and that maybe we could work on something together.
