All people need to rest. It's a part of human nature. In nearly every job, you are typically allotted ten to twenty minutes to take a coffee break.
Most everyone who works for a living sees coffee breaks as vital parts of employment. After a few hours on the job, it's a little ray of sunshine and something to look forward to.
Even kids are raised with the notions of coffee breaks. Recess, after all, is the preadolescent form of the coffee break. Ever since we were children, we were taught that we needed to take a break and get some rest. To school children, recess is the one time of day that they can be themselves without feeling the pressures of the classroom.
Why are coffee breaks so important?
Coffee breaks hold a lot of clout, even to those who don't drink coffee. These daytime oases are much more than opportunities to sip a cup of joe. A coffee break is the chance to relax, kick back, cool off a little and get an energy recharge to prepare for what's coming next.
These breaks are really metaphors for our lives. Coffee breaks are there because we are, after all, only human. We simply can't work all day without any rest. Even God took a rest after creating the world.
Even machines, need their own "coffee breaks" right? Otherwise, they cannot work properly. If there's one thing that everything in this world has in common, it's the need for a "coffee break."
At those times when you're feeling blue and tired of your job, you're not really thinking about retirement, are you? You're looking forward to that next coffee break. You think about chatting with your co-workers, enjoying a stimulating coffee, having a snack and just taking a few moments to think and plan ahead.
We all look forward to our futures and we all make long term plans. There's something that we need in the meantime, however, that can help make those plans come to fruition. A coffee break is a little like going to bed. You look forward to it, but you know that you can't sleep forever. If you never woke, you'd have no chance to live. It's like a coffee break; enough rest to get you through the day, but not so much that you're not able to make a living. Everyone would like to take a permanent coffee break, but we still need to pay the bills.
Time in today's society is very important. However, even the most time-conscious person would agree coffee breaks are a necessary component of productivity.
A coffee break gives you time to become refreshed, to assess your work and to determine your pace. You can take the time to reflect on what you've done, and consider what you'll do next. Your coffee break is the opportunity to clear your thoughts and forget, for a few moments, about the pressures of the clock.
People also need to socialize. After all, how many times have you had a job where you've been working together for three years and you still don't know the person next to you?
Lunch breaks are important, but they have a different motivation. Meals are a necessity, and lunch breaks are taken to feed our bodies and recharge our overused batteries. Still, they just don't offer the same comfort that coffee breaks provide.
This comfort is what makes our coffee breaks so special. We're encouraged to gather with our co-workers, to connect and interact. Coffee breaks provide the peaceful rest that we need. So go ahead and take a break. You've earned it.
