Time Management - How Important Is It?

By: Andrew Chan

Let's discuss the importance of time management. I don't know about you, but to me, if ever there was a boring topic, this has to be it. The question then is, why take an interest in it at all?

This is really very simple reasoning. Basically, time management is about getting more out of your time and improving the quality of your life. It is much more than just managing one's time. It is also about managing one's life in relation to time. Most people tend not to be good at time management. The problem is that this is the one skill people need badly. If you cannot master time, you cannot succeed in life. Period. Where time management is concerned, it is also largely activity management. In my opinion, I think this is life management itself. Think about it, the reality is that wasting time means wasting your life.

Effective time management is the basis of good personal and professional habits. It is a conscious decision where we decide what is important and then plan our time and our lives around these things. In a profession that requires you to juggle so many tasks and responsibilities every day, effective time management is absolutely critical to your success. Everyone starts the day with 24 hours, no more and no less. How much we achieve within these 24 hours depends on how well we manage what is important to us i.e. our priorities. This could be in the areas on financial, family, physical fitness, social interaction etc.

A very vital factor to consider for effective time management is this - finding regular time slots in your day when you can work uninterrupted. Just be aware that "perfect" time management where everything goes according to plan does not exist in reality. Effective time management does require you to actively consciously clarify your priorities i.e. what is important to you. Doing this allows you to achieve a certain peace of mind and balance to your life. It is not about working harder. It is really about working smarter. It is about organizing yourself better and being aware of your priorities. This is more of the attitude you take and the choices you make.

For the majority of people, poor use of time is really the no. 1 stumbling block to their success in life. Ineffective time management is often due to a certain set of beliefs and the attitude taken by the individual. Not matter how you define success, effective time management is at the core of it. Time will never stand still (I wish it does) for anyone. This makes the effective use of time even more critical. It is probably one of those things that we wish we can grasp easily - the science of how to use the time in day more effectively. It is quite straightforward really, but it takes time to master it.

To conclude this article , here is a principle you can use for effective time management... Seize the Day! - "Carpe Diem"!
