If you're new to the Internet, or if you're into Internet marketing, you've probably heard that blogs are the bomb, but you may not know what they are. We're going to solve that issue right away. "Blog" is short for "Weblog" and it's rather like a journal. You can write anything in it that you want to write, add pictures and even video or sound. There are no editors, no censors (unless your blog is on a hosted server rather than your own), and you can let it all hang out. You can write about anything from allegators to zebus and be part of the fun.
You can have a blog hosted on your own server or it can be hosted at places like WordPress.com or Blogger.com. Yet, it's better to have your blog on your own account because then, you can do anything you want with it. You can add pictures, sound, video, banners, whatever. It's best not to get too carried away. Still a little Google AdSense is always good for a few bucks a week. What you should do is to provide great content and link to the peoducts you review so that people can further explore your recommendation. Loyal readers will trust you and be interested in what you're discussing in your blog.
The most popular blog platform is undoubtedly WordPress, which you can download free from WordPress.org. Or, if you have hosting that uses a cPanel control panel, you'll proably have Fantastico, which will install a WordPress blog with just a few mouse clicks. Just be sure to do a little planning before starting a blog. Decide what your theme will be and then, find a great tempate to suit it. Templates give blogs a new face, other than the standard WordPress theme. Some will work better for your individual purposes than others. Be sure that the template you select works in both Firefox and Internet Explorer, too. Sometimes Internet Explorer does strange things after you customize your blog.
Once your style is set, you'll want to apply for a Google AdSense account, and when approved, put up some ads. You can find WordPress templates that already have the codes installed. You just have to change the User ID number to make them specific to your AdSense account. So, if you intend to use AdSense, keep this in mind when choosing your template. Don't expect to make a fortune overnight, but you will start to see AdSense revenue as the traffic to your blog increases.
The thing is that you should have fun with a blog. Stick to a theme, though. For example, if you have a blog about cats, don't try to stick an ad for an information product into your blog, unless it's an info product about cats. You'll upset your readers.
The greatest thing about a blog is that you can really drive traffic back to your main website from it. In my next article, I'll show you ways to make this happen.
