The Top 6 Natural Choices Against Menopause Woes

By: Robert L Brown

Women undergoing menopause are often recommended to undergo some form of menopause therapy to treat or ease the symptoms of "the change". While HRT is the most commonly known therapy recommended by doctors, there are other effective therapies that a woman can choose from.

Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) have been proven to treat menopause over time. This is perhaps why close to 10 million women have tried HRT as well as other chemical-based and natural medications. However, this article gives six alternatives that may be just as effective as and perhaps safer than medications.

1. Pro-G Yam Cream Composed of a mixture of around 5 mg of progesterone and wild yam extracts, Pro-G Yam Cream is known to relieve menopause symptoms, such as depression, mood wings, headaches, hot flashes, menstrual cramps and vaginal dryness. The cream is to be applied every day. However, studies are conflicted about wild yam and its estrogen content.

2. Selenium and Vitamin E Pure Vitamin E is said to be effective for lubricating the vagina which often becomes dry at menopause, treating headaches and balancing hormones. It is best to choose a Vitamin E product that contains the complete eight compounds (consisting of tocopherols and tocotrienols) to get the maximum benefit. Selenium enhances the healing effects of Vitamin E.

3. Sarsaparilla Sarsaparilla is a known ingredient in root beer. However, this root-bearing vine has long been used by various tribes to treat headaches. Sarsaparilla contains hormone-balancing compounds. It is also useful in stimulating progesterone production and can be a potential source of estrogen and testosterone, particularly when it is synthesized. Sarsaparilla is also a natural diuretic.

4. Flax Seeds Flax seeds are excellent for lowering your cholesterol level, because of its fiber and lignan content. It also has phyoestrogens, which are effective in treating mood swings, a common menopause symptom caused by imbalanced in the hormones. Flax seeds are similar in function as HRT, which also has the ability to decrease your cholesterol levels.

5. Licorice Use licorice in treating hot flashes. It is an estrogenic herb or plant (particularly the roots) that can be taken as a tea. However, avoid too much intake of licorice as it can also lower your potassium levels and cause an increase in blood pressure. You may also take licorice in candy and in tablet form. These are available in health stores.

6. Red Clover Mix red clover with your favorite salad or take it as a supplement to help treat hot flashes. The herb is rich in isoflavones and is also useful for increasing bone density (which is particularly helpful as women who undergo menopause have more chances of developing osteoporosis. Indeed, red clover is known to have, at the very least, a mild healing effect on hot flashes, although studies remain inconclusive on this matter.

There are many herbs that are said to be effective as menopause therapy. The combined use of some of these products can ease the pain of menopause considerably. However, they should be used only under your doctor's supervision considering that some herbs may have contra-indications for other illnesses.
