Is Drug Rehab Therapy Effective For Drug Abuse? by Robert L Brown

Drug rehabilitation is a two-tiered program that aims to cure both physical and psychological dependency; drug rehab therapy is designed in the same manner. A drug rehab therapy program addresses physical dependency by starting the detoxification process to combat withdrawal difficulties. On the other hand, another aspect of therapy focuses on the psychological dependency to drugs and employs certain coping strategies based on psychological principles.

A type of therapy that has played a big part in drug rehabilitation programs is pharmacotherapy. It involves the use of medical drugs like methadone and buprenorphine to reduce a person's dependency on drugs. The mentioned medicines are said to be successful in lessening drug and substance dependence as they bring stability to an otherwise abnormal opioid system.

Another type of therapy involves detoxification. It is based on the belief that one should understand his body's condition and purge it of toxins before other recovery systems are begun. It is important that the patient first consults with a health professional before he starts with any type of drug rehabilitation program. Detoxification is a cleansing process that rids the body of drugs or toxic substances. The doctor interviews the patient thoroughly to determine which detoxification is best for him.

Drug addiction is seen to cause a chemical imbalance in the body. That is why detoxification is needed as this helps restore the body's biochemical balance. The latest research indicates that this process of restoring the chemical balance of the body is crucial for the recovery of the patient. In addition to detoxification, the patient must also live a healthy lifestyle, which includes taking in nutritional supplement and improving his diet.

Psychotherapy is another type of treatment. This is almost always used in drug rehabilitation programs. Psychotherapy involves continuous assessment of the patient's progress and counseling. What is missing at this point are conclusive studies that can pinpoint the most effective form of psychotherapy.

Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) is aimed at exploring a particular problematic behavior exhibited in the previous week or few days. This is dissected in detail by allowing the expert to get back to the chain of events that lead to the present situation. During the session, the therapist stresses adaptive behaviors by teaching the patient how to deal with the situation instead of simply trying to escape from it.

DBT deals with the behaviors and issues starting from the highly crucial ones down to the least important ones.

Brief Strategic Family Therapy (BSFT) is focused more on parents and family members of the patient. It has been discovered that negative reactions towards a teenager's drug addiction further pushes the child into continuing with the addiction. BSFT opens discussions with the parents and family members to help them use positive interaction to help the child deal with his problem and eventually recover from it.

It was noted that improving family ties can easily and speedily restore healing and recovery. Psychologists greatly rely on how positively family members can deal and interact with the patient as it greatly reduces the latters drug dependence and problematic behaviors.
