Czech Republic Europe
by John F Douglas
The Czech Republic is visited by millions of people visit every year and yet many Americans do not realize what a great country the Czech Republic is to visit on a vacation. A country whose people are resolute and strong minded.
One of the most beautiful cities in all of Europe is the city of Prague. Known throughout Europe as a city where love blossoms, it rivals Paris for the title "city of love". Host to some of the most historic buildings in the world with architectural structures dating all the way back to the Roman Empire. Millions of people visit Prague every year to see the detail and sheer beauty of these ancient buildings. The Old Town, Lesser Town, and New Town are the three districts that make up the city of Prague.
The Charles Bridge which crosses the Vltava River is one of the structures that continually attracts visitors. Construction on the bridge began in 1357 under the rule of King Charles IV and was finished in the early 15th century. This 516 meter long bridge was the only means of crossing the river between Prague Castle, Old Town and Lesser Town. A phenomenal view of the Prague castle and St. Vitus Cathedral are clearly marked on skyline. The history of the Prague castle stretches back to the nineth century with additions being added through subsequent centuries, making it one of the largest and most elaborate castles in the world. During the life of this castle it has held many titles from a church to a convent and then in the middle-ages it became the residence of the monarchy.
Another of the famed sites is the City Hall Tower located in the Old Town area. This extraordinary clock tower hosts the astronomical clock and is well known in Prague. It is an elegant timepiece that dates back to the fourteenth century. A portion of this clock was destroyed on the last day of World War II in 1945 and the part that was rebuilt is often mistaken as the older portion of the tower. The superb attention to detail in its construction is truly amazing. From 1865 to 1866 there was some major repair work done to the clock and in the process the addition of the twelve Apostles blessing the city every hour as the skeleton of death tolls the bell on the right side of the dial.
A certain museum in the town of Kutna Hora is dedicated entirely to Alchemy and the study of mysteries of mythical creations. Also found in Kutna is a stone fountain that has been built in the gothic style so prevalent in this area. The fountain, built in 1496 is still in working order today. People who visit the fountain often comment on the peacefulness they find whilst sitting at the fountain.
A rich variety of dishes are available when dining out in the Czech Republic. You will find everything from Thai, Japanese, Chinese, French and of course excellent local dishes.
