Men and Their Penises
by Andrew John
Have we always been so phallocentric? No! While many cultures considered big penis as a sign of male's power and prowess, others often ridiculed too large penises and favored more "civilized" sizes. Ancient Greeks, for example, often considered large penises as "barbaric" and unworthy of real men. The problem of our culture is that during the clash of those two traditions phallocentrism won, leaving men obsessed with the penis size while hiding any traces of penile problems they may have. For example, VigRX Plus (a premium penis enhancement pill manufacturer) has to change its name for the credit card statement's sake - to prevent anyone from noticing that something is going on with the male's penile size.
Let's make it crystal clear: the penis size is important for women, but it is certainly not number one on their list. Despite that, it is a number one problem for most males. They treat their penile size as a prime proof (or lack of thereof) of their prowess, energy and masculinity. Those who think that they penis is bigger than average feel much better and more attractive. Those who are sure that their penises do not live up to the expectations often feel insecure and tend to be very passive. The point is that most men have no real idea how big the average penis is. What is even more interesting - most of those who consider themselves below average are really above it!
The Real Penis Size
Scientists have already performed a few well-prepared penis size studies. The oldest and the most popular was the survey prepared by Kinsey in 1948. Basing on a population of a few thousand college students, Kinsey determined that the average size of penis while erected is 6.21 inches. After the scandal about the Kinsey Report, other surveys were performed only forty years later. They returned even more interesting results. The penis size, measured between 1991 and 2006 was between 5.08 and 5.90 inches. The difference is probably mostly due to the different sample tested - Kinsey relied only on the healthiest and youngest part of the population, while other studies tried to measure the average size for the whole sexually-active part of the male population. Regardless of the small differences, most doctors and scientists use the term of "the average size" for the penises which are 5-6 inches long and are around 4-5 inches of girth.
Measuring The Penis - Methodology
Most people who spend their time on assessing the size of their penises are men who are in the middle of some penis enlargement treatment. They should be warned: leave long breaks between checks! As most penis enlargement pills bring effects only long-term, by doing frequent checks you may easily de-motivate yourself by checking the size every day since the beginning of treatment. Frequent checks may cause you to terminate an effective treatment only because you are too hasty.
If you want to learn about your true size, you have to take an average - your erection will be different depending on the time of day, stress level, your mood and health condition. You need at least five-size measurements to learn about your true size. If you are enhancing your penis, make sure that all the checks you perform during that time follow the same pattern - time of day, temperature, recent sexual activity and your health condition. Only then you can find out how well the treatment goes.
You may say: "Okay, but how should I actually measure the penis size?" That's really simple: 1) stimulate your penis to full erection (ie. you are still stimulating it, but it has ceased to grow); 2) stand up; 3) take a measuring tape, press it to your pubic bone (bone right under the base of the penis) and measure your penis from there to its tip; 4) take a fabric ruler and check the girth in the middle of your penis; 5) record the results. A few tips: 1) Do not try to take the length of your penis while lying down or sitting - this won't produce any reliable results. 2) This is the method used by all researchers - if you decide to measure your penis in any other way, you won't be able to compare it with the result of the surveys.
