Thinking about Colleges in Alaska? Maybe you should be. by Daniel Z. Kane

If you want to go to college close to home, if your goal is to be a Fortune 500 CEO, or if your idea of a great day outdoors is sitting in a college football stadium, reading further will probably be a big waste of your time.

But, if Alaska is your idea of a wonderful place to live, keep reading. You may be about to fall in love with a university.

Lots of colleges and universities claim to be unique. Alaska Pacific University has a stronger case than most, from its environmentally focused programs and its 200 acre campus (where you may see a moose as you walk to class) to its willingness to take learning outside of the traditional classroom.

The University offers fairly traditional sounding business and liberal arts offerings, along with programs in environmental science, environmental policy and planning, and outdoor studies.

And, what better place could there be to learn about these areas? As the APU website says, "True wilderness is only half an hour away".

The University, by the way, does not focus on Alaska alone. During its January block, courses are offered in locales as far afield as Hawaii, Vietnam, and other regions.

APU can probably be best categorized as a niche or specialty university. It's focus, the special opportunities it offers, and the philosophy which drives it all set it apart. For the right student, it sounds like a great place.
