Is A Car DVD Player Your Next Choice Of Car Accessory? by Peter Finch

Today's cars have certainly come a long way compared to their old time counterparts in the provision of creature comforts. Even so, some people are still not satisfied and want to add their own customizing touches.

One of the more popular upgrades around at the moment is the in car DVD player. It can certainly be a boon for entertaining bored passengers and no mistake.

If you're planning to take the family on a long car journey you'll certainly have to find some way of keeping the kids entertained and what better way than by letting them watch their favorite films on a car DVD player?

There are basically two types of DVD player that are suitable for use in the car. First we have portable systems. These are not part of the car's internal furniture but can usually be plugged into the car's dashboard-mounted 12 volt power adaptor. The added benefit with these is that you are not restricted to in-car use, you can also remove them from the car and use them in the house etc. The sleeker option, and the one that will be most favored by genuine car customizers are the in-dash car DVD players.

In-dash car DVD players are hard-wired into the car's entertainment system which will have the ability to play CDs and have a radio too. The DVD screen will either be in the center console, will descend from the car's roof, or it will flip up from the dashboard. Obviously these systems can only be used in the vehicle itself, they are not detachable and portable in any way. On the plus side, you can't forget to bring them, or find that you don't have the right power cord.

The screens situated in the center console or which flip up from the dashboard can double as displays for the GPS navigation system. The downside of these is that they can prove distracting for the driver. The downside of the screens which descend from the car roof is that they are generally only viewable by the back seat passengers.

As with all relatively new technology, you can expect car DVD players to get smaller, lighter and cheaper as time goes on. At the present time, the portable DVD would be the unit of choice with most families but expect this to change as more manufacturers have plans to include in-car DVD players as at least optional extras in their up-market cars.

The only problem you may encounter if you install a DVD player in your car is that no one will want to drive, they'll all be sitting on the back seat enjoying a movie.
