So Just What Causes Premature Ejaculation? by Steve Armstrong

Premature Ejaculation is a common yet rather embarrassing complaint that has been affecting men for many generations. As yet, there is no certainty to what exactly causes it.

It used to be the case that experts believed premature ejaculation was the result of deep rooted psychological problems in the back of a mans mind that had an affect on their love making. This idea had been widely discredited and replaced by the belief that both biological and psychological factors play a part.

The problem is, medicine has not yet reached that state where they can identify with precision what exactly causes premature ejaculation for a specific individual. As a result, treatments for premature ejaculation have adapted a shotgun approach that addresses both biological and psychological factors.

Added to that there is the belief that erectile dysfunction plays a part in many mens problems.

But there is light at the end of the tunnel. These days, no many has to suffer. There are successful treatments around to cure the complaint which include counseling, medicine and exercises that provide much better control for the man over his orgasm. In most cases, a sufferer will find the best thing is to combine at least two of these techniques for best results.

What follows is an explanation of the tell tale signs, symptoms, causes and risks that all cause the condition. This can be used to assess your own problems - either current or potential.

Signs and symptoms There is no hard and fast rule as to how long it should take for a man to reach orgasm, therefore we don't really know what is normal. Experts tend to agree that the definition of premature ejaculation is when a man reaches the point of ejaculation before he wants to, in most of his experiences. This may be either during masturbation or any other sexual encounter, though it may only be limited to experiences with other persons. Two types of premature ejaculation have been identified by experts:

1.Primary Premature Ejaculation -- If you have always suffered from premature ejaculation ever since you have been sexually active.

2.Secondary Premature Ejaculation -- You have not always suffered but have started having problems only after you enjoyed previously satisfying sexual encounters without such problems.

While the experts have ruled out psychological factors as the sole reason for premature ejaculation, they have not yet reached the point where they can diagnose a specific cause for each individual. However, there have been great strides made in treating the biological and psychological factors that cause the problem. There are four basic psychological causes that can cause premature ejaculation. These are:

1. Instances when the man had to rush to reach climax for fear of being caught in the act.

2. Strong feelings of guilt that make a man rush through his sexual encounters.

3. Men who suffer from erectile dysfunction and are concerned about maintaining their erection through their sexual experience. This may result in establishing a pattern where the man rushes to climax while he still has an erection.

4. Men who get anxious , particularly about their sexual performance or other matters.

In addition, there are also six basic biological causes that can lead to premature ejaculation. These are:

1.Hormone that is not normal

2.Abnormal levels of neurotransmitters (brain chemicals)

3.Abnormal reflex activity of the ejaculatory system

4.Certain thyroid problems

5.Infection and inflammation of the prostate or urethra

6.Inherited traits

Some doctors believe that lifelong Primary Premature Ejaculation is usually a result of biological causes.

Also, some additional rare causes of premature ejaculation can include the following:

1.Damaged nervous system resulting from trauma or surgery

2.Withdrawal from drugs such as narcotics or trifluoperazine, a treatment for anxiety and other mental disorders.

Risk Factors Finally, there are some factors than tend to increase the risk of premature ejaculation. These include:

1.Impotence -- Having problems getting or maintaining an erection often leads to premature ejaculation. By some estimates, one of three men suffering from premature ejaculation also have impotence problems.

2.Health problems -- Medical conditions that make men feel anxious about sex, such as heart disorders, often compel men to rush through sex.

3.Stress -- Being stressed about other areas of your life can hinder your ability to relax and result in premature ejaculation.

4.Medications -- There are certain drugs that can naturally cause premature ejaculation.
