What Is Life Coaching?

What is Life Coaching? by Georgina Kirk

If a genie gave you three wishes and created a new life for you, is this what it would be like? If you are not living that life, it's high time you were! A life coach can help you to discover the genie inside you and make your dreams come true.

A life coach will not make your decisions for you. What he/she will do is make you aware of the abundance of options in front of you, motivate you to make the desired changes in your life and support you in your journey from where you are now to where you want to be.

Generally, life coaching is done through a series of regular, one-to-one sessions, each lasting 45 minutes or an hour. You can meet or talk on the telephone. With the coach's help, you will focus your goals and plan the steps that will get you there. At the next session, you report back on your progress.

Life coaching is different from counselling and psychotherapy in that counselling and psychotherapy tend to work with the emotions, whereas life coaching is about getting results through behavioural change. Your coach will talk to you not so much about how you feel as about what you have done and what you are going to do next. However, life coaching does involve challenging negative thought patterns (which we often inherited from our parents), in order that you may discard them and be free to enjoy your promising future.

Have you always dreamed of having your own yacht/travelling the globe/being a business tycoon? Do you want to get in shape/learn Spanish/make new friends? If so, why haven't you done it yet? With the help of a life coach, you can break through your fears, raise your self-esteem and go for it!

Life coaching won't necessarily work for everybody. People who have been traumatised, either as children or later in life, may find that they need to work through the pain in therapy before they can benefit from the brisk approach of life coaching. However, if this is not your case and you are feeling stuck in a rut, struggling with time management, sure there must be a great deal more to life than this, then life coaching can transform you.

You can have life coaching to give your life a general overhaul or to concentrate on a particular area. You can have coaching to help with your work, to help you to get the job you've always wanted, coaching to support you through a big change such as relocating, coaching to inspire and motivate you to make the most of your life - any, all or a combination of these.

To find yourself a life coach, just search the internet. If one doesn't live close enough for you to visit, remember that telephone coaching works very well. A good coach will give you a free consultation before the coaching proper starts, so you can decide whether you want to go ahead, do something different or try another coach. So there is no risk involved in contacting a life coach. Why not do it right now?
