Why Should I Raise British White Cattle
by Morris Halliburton
The British White Cattle breed of today is a result of selective breeding for purity. British White Cattle possess characteristics and qualities that set them apart from other breeds of beef cattle. In the past they may have been known as a status symbol in medieval Britain but are now a mainstream beef cattle breed.
British White Cattle have excellent milk and quality meat producing abilities. Of late the selection has been more on their meat producing ability owing to their superior carcass to live weight ratio and excellent feed to weight ratio.
You do not have to look very far to find the many traits that make British White Cattle a profitable breed of registered beef cattle. They are an old British breed, white with black points, i.e. ears, muzzle, eyes and hooves. This color trait enjoys a high incidence of being passed on to their offspring. Being British and white are preferred traits not easily obtained from any other breed.
Do you prefer a polled breed of cattle? British White Cattle are naturally polled and this one trait sets them apart from many other breeds. Cattle without horns (polled) are less dangerous around people and easier to handle. Commercial cattle buyers seem to always prefer polled cattle.
British White Cattle may possibly be the most docile beef breed of cattle in the industry. A gentle animal will always do better than wild animals in any environment they are placed in. A trait that makes them easier to handle. They perform better in a feedlot situation by quickly adapting to the surroundings.
British white cattle are know for their ability to produce a calf once every 12 months. Those who own them will tell you that fertility is not one of their shortcomings. Easy calving and strong fertility is one of their major traits.
Well hung udders with small teats that point to the ground and hold their shape is common among British White Cattle. The cows have the ability to produce plenty of rich milk for their calf. The calves will grow off good and have excellent gains from their mother's milk and pasture grass. A herd of British White Cattle will take care of themselves. They practice kind of a rotating nursery system. This is where one mother will act as a guard cow and will rotate with other cows in protecting the calves so the rest of the herd can graze. They have a built in instinct where the whole herd protects against predator.
The carcass quality of British White cattle is usually very high. The will consistently hang a carcass of over 60% of live weight. It will be lean and tasty but also have a desirable amount of marbling.
The cattle are efficient and trouble free. British white cattle efficiently convert feed into pounds of gain or maintenance. The British White breed is naturally resistant to many diseases like tuberculosis and viral pneumonia. The black ears, eyes, nose, teats and hooves reduce or eliminate pinkeye, cancer of the eye and feet problems. It is very tolerant to heat or cold and this helps them to grow even in harsh climatic conditions.
The longevity of a cattle herd is tied directly to their profitability. A cow that is able to thrive for many years and raise a good calf each 12 months is always the most favored. British White Cattle are very good at living to a ripe old age with many surpassing 20 years.
Why not try a British White bull if you are running a commercial crossbred herd. When bred to a British White bull cows will have an easy time calving and produce calves that hit the ground growing. You will be really pleased with your calf crop.
