Why Women Carry Handbags
by Handbag Addict
From as far back as 430 B.C, women have always carried handbags. The reasons for this, though, are both complex and surprising. In fact, it is both genetically and culturally determined that a woman should, if not must, bear a handbag. Here, although I don't have the space to go in depth, I will try to reveal at least a few of the reasons behind it.
Handbags are far more important, and have a much further reaching significance, then most people really know. If you take a look at some of the different kinds of bags used by people in various different roles, you'll see there is actually a lot of similarity between, for example, an African witch-doctors medicine bag and the handbag of a high society lady.
The first part of the reason, is simple and obvious, namely that you need a bag to carry things. Of course, everyone needs to carry things on occasion, but you don't see men carrying a purse. Or at least, not often. The reason for this is that women have, evolutionarily speaking, been the caregivers of the family and were responsible for making sure that everyone had what they needed.
More important then this, the woman were responsible for raising children, and so needed ready access to anything their child might require at a moments notice. Then, again, women are the traditional organizers, and often have an obsession with keeping things neatly ordered.
The second reason, is that a bag conceals its contents. Now, I know this may seem rather obvious and trite, but what you may not realize is that anything hidden immediately becomes the focus of imagination, and is surrounded by an air of mystery. A bag, be it the bag of a doctor or a wizard, contains peculiar items beyond the understanding of the common man. This sets the holder of a bag, any bag, as a person apart- marked out in some mysterious manner.
The average woman, of course, is not a mysterious wizard. However, the mystery of her bag does set her apart. Just like the wizard, at least as far as most men are concerned, a woman's handbag is filled with strange and mysterious items that only she understands. And let us not forget, an air of mystery is extremely attractive.
So the hidden contents of her bag sets the women apart, and surrounds them with a strange attraction, as well as giving immediate access to whatever she might have need for at the moment. There are two reasons for you, and I'm sure you can guess the third.
Handbags are fashionable. That's right, as simple as this. A woman's handbag is the most obvious sign of her place in the world. Whether it be plain and simple, or covered in shimmering diamonds, the appearance of her handbag makes it clear where she stands socially.
Take, for example, Margaret Thatcher. Notice how closely her handbags resembled that of the Queen Mothers. Was this coincidence, or was there some deeper connection? Maybe both of these women chose the same style, because of their similar positions. Both leaders, with a great deal of power, and most importantly both female, it should come as no surprise that they both would choose similar handbags.
To conclude, then, let me say that handbags have an incredible amount of significance. Far more then you might expect, a handbag is intensely linked to everything that is female. Allowing a woman to stay organized, while endowing her with an attractive sense of mystery, it also shows clearly her social standing. This is the reason for handbags.
