Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if your a horse lover then I am sure you are like me and think they are very beautiful and some of the smartest animals to ever live, but in order to spend time with them safely you need to follow some simple precautions so both you and the horse are safe and no one gets hurt from an unsafe act.
Safety in the barn is important because you will spends lots of time with your horse inside the barn, make sure all the equipment within the barn is stored safely. Many injuries occur from a simple rake or brush laying on the floor and causing your to trip. Remember to pick up and place everything back in its proper place.
Cleaning the barn is an essential part of safety for both you and your horse, this should be done on a daily basis along with wearing the correct outfit for working inside a barn, one of most important is footwear, never wear open shoes.
Safe distances and proper approach are one important part of horse safety, whenever working around the horse it is a good idea to keep track of how close you are in relation to the horse and when walking behind the horse always walk as close as possible to the animal, by doing this you minimize the potential for the horse to rear or kick you. The closer you are to the animal the less room the horse has to get it's leg moving to actually kick.
Do not allow the animal to get into the barn by itself. Always lead your horse to the barn. It is a good idea to train your horse for this so that it becomes safe for other people or animals present at the time the horse starts kicking in the barn. While taking the horse into the barn try using a lead rope for this purpose rather then using a halter. Using a lead rope will give you more control. While doing so, keep in mind not to hook your fingers through the halter straps or rings. There are chances of your fingers getting caught and injured if the horse tries to pull away.
Whenever watching horses or handling horses keep in mind that many things can scare a horse resulting in the chance for both injury to yourself or your horse. Follow the safety precautions outlined in this article so you can continue to enjoy time with your horse.
Always keep your animals separate. Avoid placing them alone in a closed place. This is simply because animals need not necessarily get along well with each other. They could get restless and this could make the situation hazardous for you and the other animals.
