Roulette's History

Roulette's History by Dr. Neubauer

Roulette is one of the casino's true classics, and it's a rare casino that doesn't have it. But roulette was not always exactly the way it appears to us now. There were several different changes the game went through over the centuries before it finally became our beloved classic.

Long before roulette began, there were several other games that resembled the modern version of the game. In France, as well as in England and Italy, there were games that required a little ball and a wheel of some type. Some of these wheels featured colored slots, much like roulette. Some of these games were likely the inspiration for the game we now play in casinos.

Roulette itself was originally a French word, meaning little wheel in literal translation. It is believed that the game originated in France in an earlier form. It is also believed that France's most famous mathematician, Blaise Pascal, had a hand in inventing roulette.

A casino in Paris began using a roulette wheel in much the way they are known today in 1796. After it had been in play for awhile, proving popular with Parisian casino players, it began to spread outside of Paris. In the early 1800s the roulette wheel began popping up in the United States. The game as it was had a very small house edge, prompting American casinos to change the game slightly. An extra number was added to give the house a better advantage, and American roulette was born.

At one time, gambling in any form was illegal in France. At that time, roulette was exported to Germany. Casinos in Hamburg loved roulette for the players that flocked to play it. Roulette kept growing, and soon more countries were picking it up, both within Europe and without.

When France adopted legalized gambling, roulette was still restricted to just one area. Monte Carlo was the home of roulette for a long time, and players flocked there to play the popular table game. In 1933 it became legal for roulette to be played outside of Monte Carlo, and French casinos have never looked back.

The internet has moved the game of roulette into another incarnation. The rise of internet casinos has meant that virtual roulette is available for play at all times. Players no longer have to make a trip to a land based casino in order to get in their roulette play time. Gamblers have the choice between traveling to a casino or staying put and playing in a virtual one.

Roulette has also had another advantage by way of the internet. Players can now get effective roulette systems through the internet. And like the virtual casinos, these systems are available to anyone at any time. Information that once would stay within a circle of high rollers is now available to anyone. There are many roulette systems out there competing for attention, however, and some are not everything they promise. Just one roulette system does everything, and that is the system that can be found here: www.winning-at-roulette.com.
