Notary Public Statement

By: Sam Dillon

I never understood what a Notary did when I was growing up, but I knew that my mom went there a lot. We lived in Pennsylvania, and in that state, these people can do a lot of things. I’m not sure if every state has these, but I think many of them do. I know in PA they can help you with registering a car, and many other things that you need. In New York, you go to the DMV for this type of thing. The only problem is that even though they might be easier to get to, you do have to pay more money when you use them. I never thought about all that they can do until I needed a notary public statement to help with my little girl.

My daughter is actually my niece. She was born to my brother and my sister-in-law, and when my brothers wife died, he could not care for the baby. She came to me at two years old, and has been with me ever since. My brother loves her, but feels she is best left with me. My little girl calls me mommy, by her own choice, and he feels that is more important than anything. When she came to live with me we went to get a notary public statement in case I were to have any problems. As it turned out, this is a handy piece of paper.

In order to get the notary public statement, my brother and I had to go together. He and I both had to show ID, and then we told her what we wanted the paper to say. He was granting me temporary custody and the paper was to say that, as well as give me permission to get her medical care and all of the things parents needs to be able to do. We both signed the notary public statement and then it was signed and sealed by the Notary and we were on our way.

A notary public statement is not something that will be legally binding in many ways, but can help you in some situations. Some places won’t accept them, and when it comes to a child, it is always best to go through the courts. That is why we are adopting her. The notary public statement was just there to fill in the time between so that I had some way of protecting her, even if it was not the most ideal situation.
