Motion Detectors For Safety And Security

By: Evan Tyler

Back when I was growing up, there was not much to motion detectors. I had a motion sensor detector, and it was little more than a toy. Although the principal has been around for a long time, it used to find more applications in toys and kids movies than in serious security applications. I had a spy kit which had its own motion detector, and I thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was a pretty simple device – nowhere near as complex as today's modern security systems. Basically, it sent out an invisible beam of infrared light. That beam would bounce off the wall and returned to the motion detectors. If anything or anyone disturbed the been, it would trip the alarm.

Modern motion detectors are much more sophisticated than that system. Although there are single beam systems still in use, many motion detectors can detect movement anywhere in the room. They can sense fluctuations in temperature, irregular air currents, tiny vibrations undetectable to the ear, and other signs that an intruder has entered the room .The best of the best are all but unbeatable, and even the low end, low-tech ones are very good.

Many people think that a basic home security system is enough, but it isn't always. Don't get me wrong – window bars, a security alarm, and some outdoor security lights will ward off the majority of criminals, but it never hurts to be too safe. I would say that something like 95% of houses can be entered by a determined, hardened criminal. Using more advanced devices like motion detectors and security cameras makes sense for the modern homeowner. After all, high-tech security gadgets are less expensive than ever. Even on a moderate budget, you should be able to afford to give your family the highest level of protection.

Of course, just installing a high-tech security system isn't enough. One of the most common causes of break-ins is failure to maintain a working security system. Electronic systems, like anything else, can fail in time. It is important to get them checked out every six months to make sure that everything is still working smoothly. After all, a routine security check could save you from break-ins. It could help you to safeguard your possessions, your family, and maybe even your life. It is easy to let slip, but it is essential to remember.
