Model Airplane Memories

By: Lane Klein

When I was a little kid, owning a model airplane was one of my fondest dreams. I had built model kit after model kit, but I had never had one that could fly, drive, or go on the water. Model flying looked like a miracle to me. I wanted to be an astronaut, like many kids my age. An airplane model seemed like the logical first step in my training. Unfortunately, my parents would not let me indulge my dreams of glory. Model airplanes, my mother reasoned, were far too dangerous. She was worried that I would lose control and crash it into somebody. Perhaps it would even come back and hit me!

When I finally was old enough to buy a model airplane, I was like a kid again. I had been waiting for this for so long that I was practically giddy. My girlfriend made fun of me of course, but I didn't care. I had been waiting for to crank up that model engine for so long that, even if it turned out to not be as cool for an adult, I still had to try. After all, it was the realization of one of my earliest dreams – to fly.

As it turns out, flying model airplanes is every bit as exciting as I had anticipated. With radio controlled cars and boats, people seldom take a second look. They glance at you as the little engine hums and then ignore you from then on. But with model airplanes, things are different. A model airplane kit is fast, powerful, and dangerous. It can do something that they can't – it can take off and fly. With little practice, you can learn to do loops, barrel rolls, dives, and other amazing tricks. Although it is possible to crash and damage a model airplane, most of the beginners models can be fixed pretty easily.

If you have ever wanted to fly a model airplane, I highly recommend trying it. A lot of grown-ups feel silly being in public playing with a kids toy, but you might as well get it out of your system. After all, if you have the fever, you know what it's like. If you never got to use an rc airplane as a kid, now is your chance. Why not take that chance and go fly with it! If a few parents look at you oddly, you can bet the kids will still stare your way with wide-eyed wonder. It is fun for kids of all ages.
