My Thoughts On Doll Collecting

By: Jason Harris

Did you ever notice that when doll collectors get together they can't help expressing their love, fondness and appreciation for them? I'm the same way myself -- I actually got into the field of doll collecting much later in life. But I have been a doll lover for a lot longer than I have actually been collecting them -- and I think that's probably true of most doll collectors.

Nostalgia for the past seems to be a primary motivating factor for many doll collectors. For example porcelain collectible dolls are quite popular today. In these dolls we seem to recapture something of long-lost era -- one that reflects style and grace and a kind of sophistication that is rarely seen today. Porcelain doll kits are also collected, especially by ladies who are handy with a needle and thread, who enjoy making the outfits and accessories from these kits.

Did I mention doll accessories? Well here's another area for doll collectors-- collecting doll houses. Some folk go all out and make their own doll house, as doll house plans are widely available today. It is even possible to use the capabilities of a PC to draw up plans for a doll house -- and this will save you the time and expense involved in actually constructing them, until you find a design that you like.

When adding to your doll collection, it is important that you try to collect quality dolls and accessories. And if you are looking for quality doll accessories, you can't get anything better than Amish doll furniture. Amish craftsmen are world renowned for their attention to detail and superior craftsmanship, and they put this same emphasis on quality and craftsmanship into their doll furniture construction as well.

Speaking of collecting dolls, one of the most collectible dolls of all time are Franklin mint dolls. You've probably seen these advertised from time to time -- they have a great many different types, usually featuring in the face and body of a famous film, TV, movie or other important person. Franklin mint dolls are highly collectible -- sometimes they increase in value many times over, as the years pass.

And when it comes to nostalgia, many ladies today are trying to recapture their childhood by collecting Betsy McCall dolls. These dolls were first publicized in McCall's Magazine in the early 50s -- and they are highly sought after today -- not only the dolls but also Betsy McCall dolls accessories as well.

The American Girl Company is making it easy for little girls to relate to their dolls. This innovative company manufactures a line of doll clothing and accessories that match an identical set of clothing for girls. This means that your granddaughter or niece could pretend they have a "little sister" -- or better yet, a twin sister -- which they can carry with them at all times.

Of final area where you might want to begin collecting is that of primitive dolls. These resemble the kinds of dolls carried by children during the pioneer days. They are not sophisticated dolls at all, being made with the simplest of fabrics -- they really communicate a sense of history, history that you can hold in your hands.

The nice thing about doll collecting is that it is such a vast field of collecting that no matter what your interests, you will find a doll type or style that you will enjoy collecting. In addition to the pleasure that you will receive from collecting them, if you become a savvy collector you can put together a collection which will increase in value greatly over time. Imagine being able to give your doll collection to your own favorite little girl; then they can continue your collection where you left off.
