Your Pet's Health: Eating Healthy And Good Digestion

By: Stacy Kubach

The digestive system of a dog is very similar to a cat's in many ways. Their digestive systems are acidic, and these canine creatures do not have long intestines. They are made to digest one type of protein at a time, not multiples (like man-made foods). Again, raw meats are full of B- vitamins that are very important to good health. Out in the wild, dogs don't BBQ, fry, grill or bake their kills - they eat it raw, just as nature intended.

Pet foods have more food additives and artificial ingredients than processed foods do for humans according to many people. This is the only way, they say, to make the foods desirable for the pet. This is primarily due to the poor quality of pet food ingredients in general.

Vegetables are a vital part of a dog's diet and no, they don't hunt for vegetables. The animals they killed provided the predigested vegetables needed. Give your dog a carrot and you would see it again during elimination because he does not have the intestinal make-up to eat and digest them on his own. Carnivores will first search their prey's stomach when they make a kill and sometimes will leave the rest.

Dogs swallow whole, they don't chew like cats and they eat continuously as long as food is available. If you find your dog regularly eating vomit, feces, the bodies of dead animalc and rotten garbage, it's a good chance your dog is looking for the nutrients they are missing from the their food. Good home-made food should eliminate these habits and get them on their own schedule.

Dogs are not natural grazers. It's normal for them to eat until they are satisfied. Then they rest, digest and eliminate before the next feeding. This is just like in the wild and therefore is the natural way for them. When your dog is fed good home-made food, they will only eat when the time is right just like wild animals do.

A dog or cat that is fed a properly balanced diet will not need to drink as much water. The food will provide the necessary moisture content that their bodies need. Always feed your pet as you would feed yourself. Organic is best, along with good distilled water. It is not the end of the world if you don't do this, but just do your best.

Pets, like people will decide what they like and don't like. They will let you know. Some like more meat, others like more veggies. Remember to keep them away from onions, chocolate, and fish! If your animal is picky and unsure, add small amounts of the homemade food to their old food until you have converted them over. As with your own eating habits, your pet's health needs to be watched and improved whenever possible.
