Skiing Holiday Planning Tips

By: Jamie Preston

Going on a skiing holiday is one of the most popular winter vacations. Ski resorts cater to singles, couples, and families, and can accommodate a weekend getaway or a week long ski holiday. Of course, there are several things to consider when planning the perfect skiing holiday.

First Steps to Planning Your Skiing Holiday

Picking your destination for your skiing holiday is easily the most important part in planning your trip. You will want to consider how far you are willing to travel, as well as how long you want to stay. If you are looking for just a weekend getaway or a day trip, you will want to choose a location reasonably close to your house.

There are many resorts on the east coast that cater to this sort of trip, and have fantastic skiing without the higher prices of an all-inclusive resort. A day-trip to just ski is perfect for one of these no-frills mountains. If you are not lucky enough to live within driving distance of a ski resort, you’ll likely want to stay for a bit longer, and will want a more extensive ski resort or accommodations. Many resorts offer all-inclusive packages for your skiing holiday that include lift tickets and lodging, and if you are staying at a resort that offers this, it is often the way to go.

When you choose a mountain, you also want to consider what kind of skier you are, and whether or not the mountain can accommodate your needs. Consider as well if the mountain is big or small, kid friendly or adult centered, and how accessible it is by car or air. You may also want to consider the date for your skiing holiday; trips over holiday weeks are generally much more crowded, and popular resorts book early. If you are able to travel during an off-peak week, the mountain will be less crowded and you will likely be able to save some money on your skiing holiday.

So, Where Should I Go On My Skiing Holiday?

Once you’ve considered all the basics, there are some top ski resorts in the United States to choose from. On the east coast, Stowe, Killington, Stratton, and Lake Placid are consistently rated as top destinations for a skiing holiday. And in Colorado and Utah, you can’t go wrong at Aspen Snowmass, Breckenridge, Beaver Creek, Deer Valley, Park City, and Vail. There are also top rated ski resorts in California, such as Sun Valley, Big Bear, and Mammoth Lakes, all perfect destinations for your skiing holiday.
