Downhill skiing, also known as alpine skiing, is the most common skiing event in the Winter Olympics. But downhill skiing isn’t just for elite athletes. Anyone can try downhill skiing, even if they aren’t planning on racing down a mountain.
What Is Downhill Skiing?
Downhill skiing is just what you would think – a ski course where skiers are sliding down a hill or mountain. This is different from cross-country skiing, where the skier slides across a flat area. Downhill skiing is what the majority of recreational skiers are doing. It can be done at nearly any level; while basic downhill ski courses have skiers going straight down a small hill or slope, more advanced courses involve turns, steeper slopes, uneven terrain, and higher speeds. Competitive downhill skiing involves a race down the course, and has skiers tackling some of the toughest courses in the world.
Downhill Skiing Competitions
There are four major types of alpine skiing events. These are slalom (where skiers navigate a series of tightly grouped poles), Giant Slalom (similar to slalom, but with a greater distance between the poles), Super G (a combination of downhill speed with the gates of Giant Slalom), and downhill skiing. Downhill skiing events are the fastest, with skiers reaching speeds of up to 80-90 miles per hour. Downhill skiing courses generally start at the top (or near the top) of a mountain, and are usually about two miles long. The course generally combines several different terrains (ice, snow, powder), turns, steep and flat sections, and several jumps.
Downhill skiing is not a judged sport – the winner is based solely on speed. Each skier races individually against the clock, with the times being compared at the end. In most competitions, skiers get two or three runs, and their best run counts. Typically, it takes the best skiers between 1 ½ minutes and 2 ½ minutes to complete the course. Downhill skiers get to prepare for their runs by inspecting the course and taking several practice runs. You will often hear them discuss how to take the best line, which simply means figuring out the best way to get through the course in the least amount of time.
Olympic Downhill Skiing
In the Olympics, downhill skiing is one of the most popular events. In the most recent Olympics in Turin, the gold medal in men’s downhill skiing was won by Antoine Dénériaz from France. In the women’s downhill skiing event, Michaela Dorfmeister from Austria won the gold medal.
