Planning A Fun Boating Holiday

   By: Nicky Patterson

If you’re looking for something other than two weeks lying on the beach this year for your annual vacation, why not consider taking a boating holiday instead?

Even if you are not a sailor, boating holidays are available for the majority of people to enjoy. Most companies who provide this type of vacation will offer tuition to people who are unfamiliar with sailing before they set sail. Most boats offered for this type of break are easy to handle – you should just make sure that appropriate safety and navigation advice is given before you take charge of the boat.

Will I Get Seasick?

If you don’t tend to travel well, a boating vacation may not be for you. It should be remembered however that most boating trips of this nature are in inland waterways – lakes, rivers and canals as opposed to the open sea – so seasickness may not be a particular problem. If in doubt take some seasickness tablets with you and avoid rich foods such as fried foods to be on the safe side.

Are You Fit Enough To Handle A Boating Vacation?

For the majority of people the answer to this will be yes. But you need to be sure you can get in and out of the boat easily, which can be a problem for the elderly and infirm, especially as the boat will move in the water as you board.

If you are intending on taking children with you, make sure they understand the safety issues involved with being on a boating vacation. It’s a good idea to get them to wear life jackets when they are on board – boats can be exciting places for children and it’s easy to go overboard if you don’t respect the different environment.

How Spacious Are The Boats On Offer?

Boats vary in the number of bunks they have available. Some will have basic bunks which need to be crawled into to sleep, while the most luxurious boats will have quarters containing a reasonably sized double bed and plenty of storage room. Consider how much room you will need to have on your boating vacation, and check the prices for different sized boats before booking.

Finally, remember that cooking on board a boat is very different to cooking at home. The galleys are small but functional – so view your boating vacation as an experience to remember, rather than an opportunity to cook an extravagant meal every night.

If you approach your boating holiday with a sense of adventure you will not be disappointed.
