If you have ever visited the state of Vermont, you would be familiar with the Hermit Thrush that is its state bird and this species is about fifteen to seventeen centimeters long with a white to dark white pattern in the underwing that is quite characteristic of the thrushes of the Catharus specie. It is usual to find that the adult Hermit Thrush is mostly brown in the upper parts of its body and the tails are quite reddish in color. Lower down on their bodies you will see white and darkened spots especially on the breast while the flanks are mostly either grey or even quite brown. And, the legs are pink in color and there is also white eye ring as well.

Likes Coniferous Regions

The Hermit Thrush is found in the coniferous regions and even in wooded parts of both Canada and also Alaska, and also in many of the northeastern as well as western parts of North America. Their nests are cup shaped when on the ground and are also not found very high up on trees. It is common to see Hermit Thrushes migrating to the wintering grounds down in the south of the United States and further south to the Central American countries as well. And, it is also normal for the Hermit Thrush to breed only in forests though they can also sometimes do so in parks as well as in your wooded neighborhoods in suburban parts of the city and sometimes though only rarely will they be found in the western countries of Europe.

It is also quite common for the Hermit Thrush to forage for food on the floor of the forests in which they dwell and they can also be found looking for food in trees as well as in shrubs and their main meal would probably consist of insects and also berries.

The Hermit Thrush has found mention in American literature as well with no less than an eminent author such as Walt Whitman finding in it a symbol of American poetry, voice and the bird is even mentioned in Whitman’s canonical poem called Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking. There is also a poem named A Hermit Thrush that was written by Amy Clampitt and it is even used in reverse form to identify a band named Thrush Hermit. And, if you look into literature in depth you will also find the Hermit Thrush mentioned in T.S. Eliot’s poem called The Waste Land.
