Snowboard Clothing

By: Kai LeBerge

Snowboarding is a unique sport that offers quite a different winter sport experience from skiing and it has also been the fastest growing sport in the country. Of course, the equipment is going to be quite different from skiing and even one snowboarding event to another. However, the snowboard clothing will be relatively the same. There is a certain way that you should wear your snowboard clothing to ensure a fun, easy time in that cold, powdery stuff called snow.

Your Base Layer Of Snowboard Clothing

For your base layer, you should wear some long underwear bottoms, socks and a long-sleeved top made from a material that wicks moisture away from your body. Typically, polypropylene or synthetic polyester is the best choices for the underwear bottoms and long-sleeved top. For the socks, avoid cotton materials as they absorb moisture without wicking it away from your body, so that means a cold day for you. A thin layer of soft wool is a great choice for your socks, which you would want to pull over your long underwear bottoms.

Your Second Layer Of Snowboard Clothing

Your next layer, after your base of long underwear, long sleeves and wool socks, should be insulating. Your insulating layer could entail a wool jacket or pullover sweater or even one of those new types of synthetic micro fleece sweater tops. The great thing about this insulating layer is that you can add another insulating layer if the day is particularly cold or if you warm up a bit too much, you can remove an insulating layer and still be protected from the elements.

Your Last Layer Of Snowboard Clothing

For your outer snowboard clothing, the pieces you will need are jacket and pants that have both waterproof and windproof properties. You will need to decide whether the need for additional venting or even more waterproofing details are required based on the climate. Your pants should have a gaiter (inner cuff) that conforms tightly over the top of each boot. This is a necessity and will protect your feet from snow spilling into the boots.

Snowboard Clothing Includes Accessories

Hitting the white stuff during the day can be quite blinding with the sun reflecting off of it which necessitates goggles for your sun and even wind protection. A helmet is another accessory to snowboard clothing that will not only protect your head but also keeps in the warmth. In extreme conditions, you need a wrap for your neck called a neck gaiter, which will protect your neck and face from the frosty conditions. Of course, one of the most important parts of the whole snowboard wardrobe is the gloves that stretch and fit over the cuffs of your jacket. Mittens are also acceptable as well and are actually warmer than gloves. Remembering each layer of snowboard clothing is essential as they will not only keep you warm but also keep you safe from the elements. Choose for comfort and functionality first before you choose your snowboard clothing for fashion.
