New Mail Address May Not Be Necessary

   By: Jamie Preston

One of the things that I hated most about moving when I was a kid was getting a new mailing address. It would take me weeks remember my new mail address. Things would get lost on the way there, and my friends would not be able to keep track of it and send me letters when I had moved. I never, however, did I have to get a new mail address because of how much junk mail I was receiving. It was always easy to throw it out, and it never seemed to bother me or my parents very much.

E-mail, however, has shown the greatest increase in junk mail for decades. Nowadays, sometimes you have to get a new mail address just to cut down on the amount of spam coming into your inbox. Although e-mail filters and things like that can really help things out, they don't solve the problem completely. Sooner or later, you'll just end up on too many spammers lists. You can spend a lot of time writing filter rules, but sometimes this is a losing struggle and costs more time than it is worth. That is when it is time to get a new email address.

One of the great things about the way the Internet is set up is that you can easily find free new mail addresses. Gmail is currently the most popular e-mail domain, but there are many others as well. For example, Hotmail and Yahoo both allow people to get email at their domains. I personally love Gmail. It is easy to use and it gives you a huge amount of storage space.

Of course for a lot of people, new mail addresses are simply not an option. For example, if you work for a company with email, you might not want to get a new mail address. Your domain name would identify where you are working, something that could be important when reaching prospective clients. No matter how hopeless the spam situation might seem to you, there are always alternatives to switching your e-mail. One of them is to have a list of accepted senders. If you can keep track of everyone who is likely to send you e-mails, you can make sure that they are on your list. Everything else immediately goes into your spam box. The big problem with this approach, of course, is that someone might send you e-mail from a new address. If that happens, you will never know.
