When I was growing up, almost everything used to come in wooden boxes and baskets. You see, plastic wasn't very much in use back then. They were just starting to make it, after all, and people still liked the look of wood. Nowadays, almost everything is plastic. It does have quite a few advantages over wood. First of all, it is easy to shape, easy to make, and incredibly cheap. It is reasonably durable, and completely disposable. As a matter of fact, I never would have even thought of wood baskets as a possible alternative to my plastic hampers except for a gift I received one day.
One of my friends is completely enamored with handmade gift ideas. She is one of those do-it-yourself types – she makes everything she can. It isn't just a matter of being thrifty, or of disliking the things they sell at stores. For her, it is a labor of love. It makes her objects more special to her if she can make them with her own hands. When she sent me a wood basket filled with flowers, keepsakes, and candy, I was completely charmed. I couldn't believe that she would spend that much work on a single present – particularly since it was not my birthday. She was like that, occasionally sending out gifts on a whim. It was part of her charm, but often made me feel in her debt.
When I asked her about the wood basket, however, she told me that it was pretty easy to make. At first I didn't believe her, but she offered to show me. Apparently, it is true. You can make wood baskets and boxes without almost any work at all. You don't need a lathe, a heavy-duty workbench, or any of that. Basically, all you need is a saw, some scrap wood, a few nails, and some glue if you fancy it. You can make wood boxes and baskets for almost any purpose. When I went to her house, I saw just how many things you could use them for.
She used wood baskets for everything. Her recycling, her spices, and even many of her dishes were arranged in various wood baskets and boxes around the room. Everything looked quirky and homemade, yet the feel of it was so warm that I couldn't help but be pulled in by her passion. I have just started to make my own handmade wood crafts, and I'm very excited about the hobby.
