Technology has done many things to make our lives easier. That is what the role of technology is meant to play in our lives. There are times when people think that life has become too complicated with technology, but this is more often the way companies and management decide to apply it rather than the technology itself. I am fascinated how much information we all have at our finger tips if we choose to use it. I also think that many service providers give us much better care because of technology and information gathering, especially the medical field.
Soon our medical records will be combined so that any doctor we see will know our medical history just by bringing up our file. The federal system is already using this model with the veterans it serves and it is a wonderful thing. Transcribing medical information in the home is a growing career opportunity. Going through medical transcription school is a short-term course. Once the course is completed the person can contract with clinic, hospitals and treatment facilities to transcribe notes to be placed into the patients medical records.
Having the transcribers on a contract cuts down on the cost of housing them in a work setting and also eliminates the cost of providing a workstation and a computer. The transcriber gets a tax break because they can write off their home expenses of a computer, electricity, heat and other items that it takes to work out of the home. Most of the records that are transcribed are coded with a person’s medical identification number so the concerns of confidentiality are taken care of. Medical transcription school teaches the person how to enter material as well as where to find medical terminology that might be unfamiliar to them.
When a transcriber is hired they contractor for a certain number of documents that they will complete. Many clinics fed-ex dictation tapes and notes to the contracted person. Once the tapes and notes have been transcribed everything is returned to the clinic to be placed in the file. Once notes and dictation is completed the notes are shredded by the clinic and the tapes are erased so there is only one record for the file.
