They say that everyone is entitled to a worthy defense when on trial. What is your take on this? Do you share these feelings? I must admit that I have my concerns and doubts. In reality a lawyers defense is what decided a man's guilt. Call me cynical or jaded, but it does appear this way. Sure there is the evidence and the jury. But then there is the convincing argument presented by the defendant's attorney. This often is what determines a verdict. Just take a look at the O.J. Simpson trial. If anyone was guilty, it was that guy.
I am happy to state that I've never required the assistance of a lawyers defense in my lifetime. I honestly hope that I never have to. Our society is taught to believe that defense attorneys are the scum of the earth. This routine is depicted in crime shows everyday on national television. Take your pick from the many. Chances are you will spot a defense attorney at some point who is horrible. He/she may be good at what they do, but they're probably lacking in the scruples area. Personally I couldn't offer a lawyers defense to a pedophile or rapist. Imagine someone was accused of killing numerous people, and it looked as though they were guilty as sin, but you had to offer them the best lawyers defense possible. That would be seriously conflicting. I guess that's why we all assume that defense attorneys are heartless. The funny part is that they're the ones who roll in the bucks. With high-profile clients like O.J. Simpson, you know they're making the bucks.
Okay, so maybe you're considering becoming a defense attorney some day. Hey, just remember that the lawyers defense you offer some scumbag may just put him back on the street doing horrible things to good people. I couldn't live with the guilt. On the other hand, maybe you'll need a good lawyers defense one day. As we all know, not everyone is guilty of what they're accused. This is where defense attorneys shine. If they can save an innocent man or woman, it's a wonderful thing. Therefore, you may not want to believe every single thing you see on television and film regarding criminal defense attorneys. After all, it is just a job.
