I love to go to upscale restaurants, but I don’t do it very often. The biggest reason is the price, though we can go on occasion when we want to do something special. It is more about the feeling when we are there. Though it is really nice to be in such a place, and the food is always fantastic, there is a certain level of uncomfortable that comes with the experience, at least for me and my husband. I tend to stay in the mid range places simply because so much pretension tends to take a lot out of me.
I have yet to see many people acting natural in upscale restaurants. There is a certain breed that seems to go to them all of the time, and those are the ones that seem to want you to know how much money they have. While I might go just because I think the food is fantastic, they seem to go there to make a statement. It is hard to be comfortable around such people, and other times, it is hard to keep a straight face. I know that it is great to have money, and you should certainly use it to buy great food if you want, but cut out the stuffy act, please!
Another reason I don’t go to upscale restaurants very often is because of the way some of the patrons deal with the wait staff. I know the waiters and the waitresses could indeed move on and find another job if they don’t like the treatment they are getting, but there is just no excuse for some of the behavior I have seen in a few different upscale restaurants in my area. I am not sure I have ever seen such nonsense in a public place. I would assume the behavior is much like anyone else anywhere else. In order to make themselves feel special, they must abuse the wait staff. I don’t think they realize they aren’t putting out the image they intend.
I won’t give up getting really great food in upscale restaurants because of these people, but they do limit when I will go. There is my husband to contend with as well. He is much like me. He loves the food, but he always feels uncomfortable there. I think it is because of the dress code, and for a construction worker, I can see where that would be a problem. When he does dress up, he looks great. The problem is getting him to want to do it. I guess it’s for the best though. If we went to upscale restaurants all the time we would surely be broke by now.
