Like most people in their twenties, I had always assumed that the best way to move us to rent a Uhaul. As a matter of fact, before I got involved in my current relationship, I didn't even really need a Uhaul rental to move. You see, I didn't have more than I could fit in my car as long as I was willing to take a few trips. I had a few pieces of furniture, but they could be disassembled or strapped to the roof of my car. It was always very easy for me, and I could typically pack and move everything within one afternoon.
When my girlfriend and I decided to move into a new house, however, we knew that a Uhaul truck rental would probably be necessary. We even briefly contemplated hiring movers instead of renting a Uhaul. You see, we had a lot of stuff to take care of, and much of it was quite fragile. Ultimately, however, this is precisely the reason that we did the Uhaul rental. No one and I mean no one trusts movers. I don't think this is because movers are particularly reckless or clumsy, but because people feel protective of their personal possessions. By renting a Uhaul, we could keep an eye on our possessions. Both of us felt like, if we were doing the moving, nothing could go wrong. How wrong we were!
One of the things you have to realize if you are thinking about moving something we didn't know is that not all Uhaul rentals are the same. Of course the trucks come in a variety of different sizes, and the prices are sometimes different, but it goes even beyond that. Every Uhaul rental place is run differently. Each shop is responsible for the maintenance of its own trucks which means cleaning them, servicing them, and keeping them up. In our case, we chose the wrong Uhaul rental. It wasn't so much that the truck was disgusting which it was. It was what happened once we were on the road.
We had just finished packing up the first load in the Uhaul truck rental, and were driving it over when the car broke down on the highway. It was one of the scariest events of my life. It was also the beginning of one of the greatest inconveniences of my life. I don't want to go into all the details, but let's just say moving took another 16 hours. Next time, I'm hiring movers!
