The Scoop On Scuba Diving Employment

By: Jamie Preston

Some people love scuba diving so much they want to spend all their time doing it. Of course, this is pretty much impossible as one has to work, right? Well, you can kill the two proverbial birds with one stone by engaging in scuba diving employment options. For those looking at scuba diving as a career, there are a number of options available and the most common will be presented.

Scuba Diving Instruction

Since no one can be a scuba diver without a certification, there is an obvious need for a number of scuba diving instructors. As an instructor, there are a number of places to work including diving resort areas and dive centers. These types of jobs can be the most rewarding of scuba diving employment opportunities as they involve helping people learn the sport and embark on a unique and wonderful hobbyist pursuit.

Commercial Scuba Diving Employment

The wing of scuba diving employment that falls into the category of commercial diving is probably the most difficult physically, but it is also quite lucrative as the pay for underwater welding, cleaning and repair work pays quite well. However, as previously noted, it is also quite the difficult endeavor. If you are willing to work hard, this is definitely a rewarding career to pursue.

Owning Your Own Dive Center

Of all the different ways in which to partake in scuba diving employment, the loftiest as well as the most rewarding is to own and operate your own dive center. On a baseline level, a dive center rents and sells equipment as well as provides instruction and certification in scuba diving. In short, a dive center remains the epicenter of the sport of diving. Many instructors save their money and devise and plan their goals over an extended period of time with the notion that they will eventually own their own dive center. More power to them! This is a great goal to have and represents a successful culmination of a lifetime of scuba diving employment. What must be understood here, however, is the fact that running one’s own business involves a great deal of commitment and hard work. This means more and more time working as opposed to vacationing. Sometimes, one has to work long hours in order to break even or, worse, minimize a negative cash flow. Of course, there will also be periods of time where a person will reap windfalls of money. However, it will never be a 40 hour a week job with standardized normal hours. If one realizes this going in, then there shouldn’t be many problems. After all, the reward makes the whole process worthwhile.
