Anyone that has been involved in a remodeling project knows that there are two things that you can count on; one that the project will take longer than expected and two that the project will cost more than you budgeted for. My husband and I remodeled our previous house. Once we started in one room we found that we needed to update other rooms in the house to have it flow well. One project kept leading to another; before we knew it we had gutted the entire house. What started as a thousand dollar kitchen remodel ended up being an eight thousand dollar overhaul.
Even though we spent a great deal more money than we originally planned our friends and neighbors could not believe the improvements in the house and how reasonable the finished cost was. The way we were able to keep the cost so low was that we found discount laminate flooring. When we first looked for flooring for the kitchen I was willing to get linoleum because it fit into our budget. Many of the new linoleums are nice looking and they are easy to care for. We brought home several samples to help us decide what would look best in the color scheme that we had picked out. One of the guys my husband works with mentioned to him a warehouse store that sold discount laminate flooring. You had to measure the space yourself and figure out how much you needed and you also had to install the discount laminate flooring yourself, but he insisted that the end product was much nicer than linoleum. He had purchased the flooring for his entry as well as his kitchen. He welcomed us over to look at it.
If I had not known that the entry had laminate flooring I would have sworn it was stone. The color and texture looked like an expensive stone tile. In the kitchen he had installed a wood grain laminate that looked like hardwood. His two areas were small so he was able to get a high quality product that had been left over from another person’s installation. He told us the flooring is considered a floating floor, which means you put down a piece of thin foam on top of the existing floor and then piece the laminate together. They fit like tongue and groove. Once you fit the pieces you glue the edges together. We went and looked at the discount laminate flooring. We found a perfect stone look tile for the kitchen as well as the entry. My husband’s co-worker came and helped us install it. The finished look was wonderful and no more expensive than the linoleum would have been once we would have paid for the installation. We have since moved. The remodel job greatly increased the value of our home. We are now considering a remodeling project in our present home.
