Personal Review Of The Stock Market

By: Evan Tyler

Have you ever thought about how much our perception of things changes as we age? I have noticed that as I get older I have noticed a different set of advertisements on televisions than I remember as a child. Maybe it is because I watch more mature shows now, but when I was growing up it seemed like more commercials were for products rather than services and medications. Services and medications seem to be the main commercials on during prime time these days. I suppose this has to do with our ageing population.

When I was growing up my parents owned a farm and worked in blue collar jobs. They had a savings account and bought savings bonds. This was the extent of their investments. They also had the land of the farm, which was a nice chunk of money for them when they sold it and moved into town. This money was placed into CD’s. Mom and dad never did any investment in the stock market. I do not know if they were still afraid of another crash and depression because they had lived through the first one, but they never advised any of us kids to invest in the stock market. When I had the opportunity to begin investing money into a deferred compensation account at work I initially went with a fixed rate account. The rate was higher than a savings account in the bank and my money grew, however some of my co-workers were make a great deal more money in their account by investing in higher risk stocks. My husband encouraged me to place at least a partial amount in the stock market so that we would have a chance at a higher rate of return. His thought was that if we would get lucky in a few of the accounts we may be able to retire earlier. I was still leery of the stock market but our financial advisor assured me that he would diversify the account so that we would not be at a high risk of losing money. We have seen a more rapid rate of growth and our financial planner is doing a great job of moving things around with the trends of the market.

I never thought that I would have money in the stock market. It always seemed like such a complicated and risky business, yet we are getting closer to realizing our dream of being able to retire at an early age. There are some times in life when it does pay to take some calculated risks. I do not think we will start playing the riskier side of the stock market like commodities, but at least I have a better understanding of how investments can work for you.
