Have you ever watched a person that has artistic talent create a picture? I love to watch this. I think the main reason is that I cannot draw a stick figure myself. When I was growing up there used to be a local program on during lunch time that had several cartoons as well as a man named Grandpa Ken. He had amazing talent. He would have a person come up from the studio audience and draw a squiggly line on a large piece of paper. The person could draw anything they wanted. The paper was on an easel. He would then look at what the person had drawn and would create a picture out of it. He had the eye of an artist. He was able to see another form from the lines drawn on the paper. I was in awe of his abilities.
I was looking through the community education classes that were being offered in our area. One of the courses was still life painting. I joked with my husband that maybe I should take the class. He knows how poorly I draw. He read the description of the class for still life painting and told me I should try taking it. The description stated that there was no artistic talent needed in order to learn the techniques needed to create still life paintings. My husband knows that I am fascinated with people’s abilities to draw and paint; he encouraged me to find out if I would be able to learn how to do some of the things myself.
I called the community education office and asked if it would be possible to talk with the instructor of the course prior to signing up. They told me that the instructor happened to be in the building and that they could connect me to him. I told him that I was interested in taking the still life painting course, but that I have no artistic talents. He told me that everyone has talent; you just need to learn to train your eyes to see things the way an artist does. He suggested that I take a water color course first because this course would spend more time teaching techniques that would be helpful in the still life course. The water color course was being offered in a different school district but he said there was room in the classes for me to participate as long as I was willing to drive the ten miles. I told him this would not be an issue. I was surprised at the amount of information that I was able to learn. He was right I do have abilities to be creative; I just needed to learn how to look at things differently.
