There are many things parents have to get their children for school, and backpacks are just one of those things. However, it is not always as simple to buy one as it might sound. Some school districts have tough rules about what is acceptable and what is not when it comes to school backpacks. This is not just something that happens in the bigger city schools, either. Small schools have these rules as well, and if they do, you should be made aware of the rules before your child enrolls and near the beginning of each year if the rules have changed.
The school district where I grew up is very small, but they have rules about school backpacks. You will find many places in town that sell backpacks that are ‘legal’ to take to school. The ones that are allowed in my old school have to be see-through in order to be taken into the school. Some of them are mesh. While they are okay in the way of the rules, they aren’t very good for rainy days. They also have some that are made of clear plastic. These seem to be the ones that parents get, as they can see into them, and they protect from the rain as they should.
There may be many other schools with the same rules. It might seem like an invasion of privacy to students, but these school backpacks are meant to keep them safe. I’m sure they aren’t perfect, but I would think they do deter some things that might otherwise be carried in these bags. On top of the rules about the school backpacks, they also have metal detectors. This is strange to me, as my hometown can only be described as the classic small town and farming community. However, bad things happen there, and these decisions are understandable to me now.
If you aren’t sure about your district’s rules about school backpacks, a quick call to the office can fill you in. I now live in a larger town, and I notice most children carry whatever backpack they choose. Size has little to do with it, apparently. Some may be able to carry what they want, but they may also find that their bags are searched on the way into the school. If you find your school has a rule about these bags, you can always find what you need online if you can’t find the bag you need locally.
