Have you ever thought about how we change the size of the space we live in with our age? When are first born we are in a bassinet in our parent’s room. As we get older we are transferred to a crib into a nursery. As we grow we get larger beds and need more specie for the things that we collect. When we move away from home many of us move to a dorm room, then a small apartment and then a larger apartment or house. Once we age and are in the latter stages of our lives we go back to a smaller apartment and for those that need nursing care into a room that is often shared with others. Life really can come full circle on us.
During the stages of expanding our belongings we need to find ways to keep things organized and stored when we are not using them. I am a fan of plastic storage boxes. I use them in all different shapes and sizes and for a wide variety of things. In the kitchen I use plastic storage boxes of all sizes. I store flour, sugar and popcorn in some. I keep cereals and pasta’s in others and I also store seasonal napkins and entertaining items in others. Of course at any given time there are several plastic storage boxes in the refrigerator to keep foods fresh. In the bathrooms of the house I use plastic storage boxes to keep towels and wash clothes neat in the linen closet. When my kids were growing up they always seemed to dig trough the towels and shove everything back into the space. I found plastic bins to put towels in and hand towels and was clothes. That way they could pull out a bin to find what they were looking for. For the bedrooms I bought each family member a plastic storage box that slides under the bed. These are for sweaters and warm socks in the summer and t-shirts and shorts for the winter. By storing the off season clothes under the bed in a clean container there is additional space in dresser drawers.
My favorite use of the plastic storage boxes is for seasonal decorations. Our attic used to have a mismatch of different cardboard boxes that held the Christmas ornaments and the Easter and Halloween decorations. Now I have plastic storage boxes for each season, color coded and written on so that you do not have to dig around in the boxes to know what is in them. It keeps the ornaments and decorations from getting crushed and the boxes can be stacked on top of each other to create additional space in the attic. As the kids get older and begin to move out they can take their storage containers with them as they begin their circle of life from space to space.
