My biker jacket is my favorite piece of clothing. It is not that it makes me look tough, or that it gets me attention (which it does). There is something else about it. I think it is the comfort it provides. In this world of disposable things, biker jackets last. An old motorcycle jacket is worth more, not less, than a new one. It has been through a lot, and it starts to show character. The stiff edges get a little softer, and old scars remind you of tough rides. Whether you have a Harley Davidson jacket, or a simple biker jacket with no purpose but to save you from road rash, you will grow to treasure it.
You do not even have to be a biker to really appreciate biker gear. As a matter of fact, most of the people I know who wear biker jackets are not bikers. If you think about it, a biker jacket is a pretty practical piece of equipment. It is warm enough for spring and autumn, but not so warm that you will be sweating if the temperature rises. It is tough and durable, and looks good no matter what. And it also provides you with protection.
I do not fight very often. I am not a violent guy. Even so, from time to time, some drunken jerk in a bar will start something with me. When that does happen, I am always happy to be wearing a biker jacket. That same tough leather that can save you from the road will also do wonders to soften a punch. A hit that might otherwise knock the wind out of you will be gentle enough to shrug off pretty easily. Sometimes, it almost feels like cheating. Nonetheless, it is always good to have a tough second hide to keep me safe. When push comes to shove, it is always good to have a little extra protection.
Picking out the right biker jacket can be pretty tough. After all, there are so many different biker jackets out there. If you are just wearing one for the look, buy one for the looks as well. If, however, you are a real biker, always go for the thicker jacket. If you do wipe out and then you have to depend on the jacket to save your life, you want the thickest one available. It might seem to be a bit uncomfortable when you first put it on but trust me, it does not take long to get used to it.
