Air Hockey Table In The 21st Century?

By: Quinn Redmond

Have you ever thought about why some games and toys stay from generation to generation and others do not? This came up during a conversation that we were having at work about what we did when we were kids. My family lived about four miles from a lake that had a public beach. At the beach was a café and refreshment stand. The refreshment stand was attached to the café, but you accessed it from outside so you did not have to go into the café with a wet swimming suit on. Inside the cage they had several tables and booths to set at and then there was also a bar area.

I remember the summer that the bar area added an air hockey table. There was a foosball table and pool table already in the space, but the air hockey table was the new attraction. We learned to play and that summer I think we spent more time in the bar playing at the air hockey table than we did swimming. This is still a popular game in arcades today. Foosball and pool have also remained very popular with teens and adults. These are not electronic games with flashing lights and computer scores, but they remain popular.

One of the women at work bought a portable air hockey table for her son’s for Christmas. The portable table can be set on top of a card table or any smaller table. She did not buy one with legs because she did not know if they would have fun playing with it. She regrets not buying one on a stand because the boys play with it all the time. She said that most of their holiday vacation was spent in the family room playing hockey. She said that her boys often fight and argue when they are playing something together, but for some reason with the air hockey they do not. She said it was the best gift she ever bought them. Her father is a carpenter so she is going to ask him if he can make a stand for the air hockey table so they do not have to keep setting it up and down when they need to use the table in the family room. She does not mind that they are playing so much because she feels this is a great way for them to burn off energy as well as improve their eye hand coordination. Her younger son was quite slow in reacting to the puck when they first started playing; now he is able to anticipate where it will come on the table. She is able to use time at the air hockey table as a reward when they get their home work done. She feels it safer than them being on computer games and they are interacting with each other as well.
