It is difficult to get accurate statistics on alcohol treatment centers because keeping track of all the people who have been treated there is often not available. Each center may be able to report on the status of those who remain in touch with the center after treatment, and also of those who may come back with relapses. By and large however, if patients decide to disappear after their treatment, or even during therapy, it is often impossible to keep track of them. This is unfortunate, because the success of a treatment center cannot be gauged accurately.
The statistics on alcohol treatment centers can be based on a number of variables. They could collate age, sex, education, or family background. These are gleaned from the admissions records of these centers. Local support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous do try to follow up on their members. Certain unconventional centers claim that the statistics on alcohol treatment centers based on the Al Anon method actually have low rates of long term success, namely ten per cent. Most adolescents and teenagers who drink claim they got the alcohol from their friends or family. The earlier they start drinking the greater is the chance of these youngsters facing drinking problems or alcoholism. Statistics reveal that nearly 14 million Americans meet the diagnostic requirements of alcohol use disorders. 18% of Americans have experienced alcohol abuse or dependence at some times in their lives. More than half the drinking adult population says they have a blood relative who is or was a problem drinker, or alcoholic. 45% of traffic accidents are alcohol related.
Young people who drink alcohol, are fifty times more likely than non drinkers to end up using cocaine. Alcohol is the most common substance of abuse among young people today. Alcohol kills six and a half times more youngsters than all the illegal drugs together...
While detailed statistics on alcohol treatment centers are hard to come by, it is believed that a chance of relapse for drug addicts is highest among adolescents. Almost 70% of them may go back to their old ways during the first year after treatment at a rehab center. The number who quit the program at a treatment center is also highest among adolescents.
