Kitchen Cabinet Remodeling Yourself

By: Baily Richards

There are different ways to approach kitchen cabinet remodeling depending on the amount of money you have to spend as well as the desired outcome. A new look can be given to cabinets if you’re on a budget or if money is more readily available, they can be replaced. Either way while undertaking kitchen cabinet remodeling you should consider other parts of the room as well.

Cabinets can be made to look new again by sanding and refinishing the current color. To make kitchen cabinet remodeling easier and more consistent, remove and door and drawers as well as the hardware. Sanding everything as far down as needed to reach a level of bare wood. If necessary, solvents can be used to help remove any build up of stain or wax before sanding to insure to get to the bottom layer.

While this process is going on, the doors also need to be cleaned completely and sanded to the same level as the cabinet faces so when completed they will match. Once sanded smooth and cleaned of all dust, they can be refinished with wood stain or painted. All cabinets, doors and drawer facings should be treated alike to maintain consistency throughout the kitchen cabinet remodeling process.

Sliding Glass Doors Create Display Space

In some instances, especially when a cabinet front two areas of the room, as in the case of an “L”-shaped cabinet, instead of doors, glass sliding doors can be used to create a see-through effect as well as allowing the cupboard to be used as a display case. When working on kitchen cabinet remodeling consider using this technique to make the room appear larger.

While working on kitchen cabinet remodeling, the countertop may have to be loosened in order to reach the upper edges of the base cabinets. This will prevent an unsightly streak from showing at the point where the countertop meets the base cabinet top. It also will allow you to clean the top of any crumbs and dust that may have accumulated there.

In the case that a lot of work needs to be done on the wall cabinets it may be necessary to remove them from the wall. In many cases kitchen cabinet remodeling can go a lot quicker with the cabinets setting on the floor of the garage or basement while you work on them. It will pose a slight inconvenience while the project progresses, but the cabinets would have to be empty while working on them anyway.
